Meet the dyns hysbyn or ‘folks in the know’ – the men and women practicing folk magic in Wales from the ancient past right up to the 1940s. These self-taught witches and wizards were trusted and relied upon by the community for predicting the future, finding stolen treasures and healing the sick – and occasionally, a love spell or a curse, though these always had a high price! This talk will explain the real historical figure of the ‘cunning folk’, the magic they and their communities practiced and what they believed, as well as the supernatural powers they were said to have. We’ll also look at why only 5 Welsh witches were hanged during the witch trials, when England executed 500 and more than 40,000 were killed across Europe. From turning into a hare to bottling the wind, the spellcasters of Wales were an integral part of medicine, justice and everyday life for centuries

2 hour talk
