Afan Adventure Dog, Outdoor Adventures for Dogs and Their Humans Discover a different way to explore the outdoors with your dog at Afan Adventure Dog, based in the beautiful Afan Valley in South Wales. Afan Adventure Dog offers a range of fun, active and confidence-building experiences designed to help dogs and their owners enjoy the outdoors together. From canicross and canitrek to mantrailing, bikejoring, dog scootering, dog SUP and Barkour, the activities provide dogs with opportunities to use their natural abilities while strengthening the bond between dog and owner. Sessions are suitable for a wide range of dogs and people, with activities adapted to individual abilities, confidence levels and needs. Whether you have an energetic dog that needs a new challenge, a nervous or reactive dog that would benefit from a carefully structured activity, or simply want to try something completely different with your four-legged companion, Afan Adventure Dog offers an opportunity to get outside, have fun and learn together. Dog Adventures in the Afan Valley The Afan Valley, north of Port Talbot, provides an exceptional setting for outdoor activities with dogs. Surrounded by woodland, hills, trails and open countryside, it is a natural playground for active dogs and their owners. Afan Adventure Dog operates throughout the Afan Valley and at locations across Neath Port Talbot and the Swansea area, giving visitors and local dog owners the chance to experience some of South Wales' great outdoor landscapes in a completely different way. For visitors staying in the area, an Afan Adventure Dog experience can also be combined with a dog-friendly break in the Afan Valley, with local accommodation ranging from campsites and glamping to cottages, lodges and hotels. Mantrailing for Dogs Mantrailing is one of the UK's fastest-growing dog sports and gives dogs the opportunity to use their extraordinary sense of smell to follow a person's unique scent trail. At Afan Adventure Dog, mantrailing sessions are designed around the individual dog and participant, making the activity suitable for dogs of different breeds, ages and abilities. It can be particularly useful for nervous or reactive dogs because the activity provides a structured and rewarding way to build confidence, concentration and focus. Rather than simply tiring a dog out physically, mantrailing gives them a chance to use one of their most powerful natural skills. Canicross and Canitrek For dogs and owners who enjoy being active together, Afan Adventure Dog offers introductions to canicross and canitrek. Canicross involves running with your dog using specialist equipment, while canitrek provides a more accessible way to enjoy the same concept while walking and exploring outdoors. Introduction sessions cover equipment, harness fitting, commands and safety, with specialist harnesses, lines and canicross belts provided where appropriate. These activities are designed to help owners understand how to work safely with their dogs while making the most of their natural desire to move, explore and work alongside their human. Bikejoring and Dog Scootering For dogs with plenty of energy and a natural desire to run, bikejoring and dog scootering offer an exciting way to experience the outdoors together. Bikejoring involves a dog pulling a mountain bike using specialist equipment, while dog scootering uses an off-road scooter. Introduction sessions cover commands, equipment and safety, with specialist dog harnesses, running lines, protective equipment and scooters available as part of the sessions. You don't need to own a sled dog or a traditional pulling breed to enjoy these activities. Many different breeds can participate when the activity is suitable for the individual dog and carried out with appropriate equipment, training and consideration of conditions. Dog SUP, Stand Up Paddleboarding with Your Dog Fancy trying something completely different with your dog? Afan Adventure Dog offers Dog SUP, giving dogs and their owners the chance to learn how to safely enjoy stand-up paddleboarding together. Whether you are completely new to paddleboarding or already enjoy SUP, sessions introduce the skills needed to keep both human and dog comfortable and safe on the water. Boards, paddles, wetsuits and buoyancy aids for both dogs and humans are provided as part of the experience. Barkour, Parkour for Dogs Barkour is essentially parkour for dogs, encouraging them to interact with their surroundings in new and interesting ways. Instead of relying on specialist agility equipment, Barkour can be incorporated into everyday walks, using natural features and the environment to encourage dogs to climb, balance, navigate obstacles and develop confidence. It is suitable for a wide range of dogs and owners and can be enjoyed simply for fun or used as a route towards Dog Parkour UK levels of competency. Afan Adventure Dog also runs a Barkour Club, allowing participants who have completed an introduction session to continue developing their skills in different outdoor environments. Adventure Dog Days Can't decide which activity to try? The Afan Adventure Dog Day allows you to combine several activities into one bespoke experience. A full-day experience can include up to four activities over six hours, while a half-day experience offers up to two activities over three hours. It is an ideal option for visitors looking for a memorable dog-friendly activity in South Wales, particularly if you are staying in the Afan Valley or exploring the wider Neath Port Talbot and Swansea area. Outdoor Canine First Aid Afan Adventure Dog also provides practical Outdoor Canine First Aid training for dog owners and people who work with dogs outdoors. The course focuses on practical skills for dealing with emergencies away from immediate veterinary assistance. Topics include vital signs, unconsciousness, CPR, choking, bleeding, shock, heatstroke, hypothermia, adder bites, drowning and techniques for restraining, carrying and moving an injured dog. The course is particularly relevant to people who regularly take dogs into woods, mountains and other remote or difficult-to-access environments, as well as dog walkers, pet professionals and anyone who wants greater confidence dealing with an emergency outdoors. Experienced and Qualified Instruction Afan Adventure Dog is led by Cheri, an experienced outdoor instructor with more than 20 years' experience working in adventurous outdoor activities. Her background includes climbing, walking, caving, paddle sports, stand-up paddleboarding and mountain biking, alongside experience working with a wide range of people through youth development and social care. Her work with Afan Adventure Dog developed from her own experience with her dog Fynn and a desire to help dogs express their natural abilities and build confidence through positive outdoor experiences. Cheri is a Mantrailing UK instructor, Dog Parkour UK advanced instructor, Sportypaws certified Bikejoring and Scootering instructor, Sportypaws Canicross instructor and qualified Canine First Aid Trainer. She also holds Level 3 qualifications in canine communication, canine behaviour, canine anatomy and physiology, understanding canine anxiety and canine nutrition, as well as Outdoor First Aid. All Afan Adventure Dog sessions are delivered using reward-based techniques and positive reinforcement. Supporting Dogs of Different Abilities and Confidence Levels Afan Adventure Dog is particularly focused on making outdoor activities accessible to different dogs and people, regardless of ability, impairment or confidence. The business understands that living with a nervous or reactive dog can sometimes make everyday activities challenging. Structured activities such as mantrailing, Barkour and joring can provide alternative ways for dogs to use their natural skills in a controlled and supportive environment. Rather than expecting every dog to behave in the same way, activities are adapted to the individual dog wherever possible. Dog-Friendly Experiences in South Wales Whether you're a local dog owner looking for a new activity or visiting South Wales with your dog, Afan Adventure Dog offers a range of experiences that turn time outdoors into something you can actively enjoy together.
